The NuVasive Spine Foundation Donates Products for the First Scoliosis Correction Surgical Procedure Performed in Belize

The NuVasive Spine Foundation participated in the first scoliosis correction surgery performed in Belize this past August. The Foundation has supported the Belize Spine Program with product donations since the program’s inception over a year-and-a-half ago.

Thirteen-year-old Valerie Sosa underwent the first scoliosis correction surgery at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on August 22, 2012. Valerie’s surgery would not have been possible without the help of products donated by the Foundation.

The equipment and supplies for the operation would have cost anywhere from $90,000 to $150,000 U.S. dollars – an expense not attainable by many patients who live in this community.

Once faced with a life of misery and pain, Valerie is now able to walk pain-free and hopes to return to school within the next few months.

“I feel so fortunate, said Valerie. “I am so happy, I don’t even have the words to say thank you to you all. God has answered my prayers. My life has changed, thanks to you all.”

During the one week clinical and educational mission trip, 14 patients were seen in clinic and three life-changing operations were performed. In addition to performing surgical procedures, there were numerous educational opportunities both in and outside the O.R. for local surgeons.

Valerie’s case sparked media attention throughout Brazil. A sample article can be found here:
